Meet Parly

Why Parly?

Parly was adopted by the honeypot as our mascot in March 2021. His adoption represents the first of many ways in which we can make charitable contributions in the name of Cardano.

Parly's Story

Parly is a male moon bear who lives in the Born Free-supported Animals Asia Vietnam Bear Sanctuary, in Tam Dao.

He arrived at the Sanctuary in December 2012 when he was about two years old. Born in 2010, Parly was confiscated at a very young age from an illegal wildlife trader in the Sa Thay district of Kon Tum Province, in central Vietnam, which is close to the Cambodian border. It was thought the trader had planned to sell Parly into the cruel bear bile trade. Bile is a digestive juice produced by the liver and stored in the gall bladder, and then secreted to help digest fats. To extract the bile, a metal catheter is painfully inserted into a bear's gall bladder.

Despite his sad start to life, Parly arrived at the sanctuary in good health. However, he was very shy and nervous. He was scared of loud noises and preferred to stay close rather than venture out too far. He paid scant interest to toys, and when his care team tried to get him to eat a normal diet, he was more interested in treats such as watermelon, banana, pumpkin and rice.

Parly gradually settled in to his new life. Today, he is a playful, confident and handsome bear who has many bear friends to play with.

Many of the bears at the sanctuary have nicknames, and Parly is no exception. He is known as 'The Ambassador' because his carers think Parly's diplomacy skills could rival even the very best United Nations ambassador! When new bears arrive and new friendships need to be formed, Parly's playful, non-aggressive nature and love of making new friends means he is the perfect candidate to ensure everything runs smoothly.

Even though Parly was not interested in toys and games when he first came to Animals Asia, they are his favourite pastime now! His favourite game is "I'll climb in the basket with you until you give in and play with me", as well as exploring, wrestling and rolling in grass. In between playing and wrestling, he can often be found on the small platform in his den.
